Many of us are raising kids with #FirstWorldProblems. I found myself wanting to reinforce the principals of gratitude, abundance and giving with my children so A few years ago I started a project with my youngest son Jahari. We go to the bank and get $1, $5 or sometimes $10 bills (depending on mamma’s budget– lol), we fold each bill in half and attach a simple post-it note of inspiration. You’re Awesome! You Are Loved! etc. One day Jahari asked me, “Mom how do you know who we are supposed to give our notes to?” I told him..something will touch your heart, and you will know.
You already know what happened… We were out one SUPER BUSY Saturday passing the GoodWill Drop Off Center. Jahari looks at me and says, “Mom, THAT’s HIM, let’s give the note to HIM!!! I shot him a look like, “How do you know it’s him???” Without missing a beat, he says, “I feel it!”
I was so tired with so many more errands ahead of me but knew at that moment I had to follow through and be the example of the lessons I had been trying to teach. Our small, simple gift of $5 and a note of encouragement moved this grown man to tears!
For all of us who have been blessed with so much take a few moments to reflect on how you can share. Giving can be material, sentimental or emotional and the best part is you never know the effect your kindness will have on someone’s day and sometimes their life!
